Unity Tutorial (Getting started)

Hey there,

So if you’re reading this, you are either interested in learning how to start using Unity to make games and for some reason you prefer text and images to YouTube videos. I’m hoping to film a couple videos and ill link them through here, but no promises on that.

Assuming you have completed downloading Unity and you have fully installed it and all that, here is how you start and make a very basic level using stock objects and packages unity supply.

I am using Unity 4.3.0, if you have an early/later version, this tutorial may have a couple things in different places compared to yours.

Anyways straight into it.

UNITY SAVE 1

As you open Unity for the first time you will have this window appear.

Projects are the core to your game, if you think of it as your library to everything you are going to have in this game. So first things first, be smart about where you save your project, because you may need to have easy access to it for a variety of reasons.

Below this save feature is a list of “Packages” that are supplied by Unity. These are great to use for learning or as temporary things in your game!

Do not be afraid to experiment with everything these packages have to offer!

UNITY SAVE 2

For this tutorial, we will be using the “Character controller”, this is a package that contains a First person controller and a 3rd person controller. Controllers are almost literally what they are named, they are what the player controls.

Once you have your project location and any stock packages you want to start out with, hit “Create”, this will start up to display a new screen if it is the very first time using Unity.

UNITY SAVE 3
There is NO WAY to access future stock packages from here on in.

I joke of course.

You should not be afraid of anything in front of you, it is relatively safe to experiment around in Unity without too many consequences, however, I suggest you don’t in a larger project unless you’re more confident.

UNITY SAVE 4

If for future reference you wish to add extra packages or forgot to at the start of it all, this is how to do so!
Lets cover what else is in front of you!

UNITY SAVE 5

For all intensive purposes I have only highlighted what is most important to begin with.

1.Scene: The scene is 100% where you shape the layout of your levels, you can drag in almost anything here, from game models to textures to sounds. This is where your designing comes to life. Note that “Main camera” will automatically always be already in your scene.

2.Game: This is what we will be seeing as you play the game, at this current state there is only a camera, so you may only see a blank screen when you click here, however, this will become just as important as the scene tab, as this is where and how you game will be seen by not only you, but anyone else who plays.

3.Project: This is where all of you assets/models, scripts, textures, sounds, materials and more will be. It is up to YOU to keep it organised, sadly it WILL become messy and may cause many headaches in the future. Start practicing organisation of your game here.

4.Hierarchy: This is very much the same as #3, however it is everything that is contained within your scene as apposed to your project. SO, you may have you character controller packages in your project, but they have yet to be placed in your scene, thus having no character controllers in your Hierarchy.. If this confuses you, don’t worry, it will slowly make sense the more you use it. 🙂

5.This is your perspective cube, it may become a trivial thing later on, but if you have accidentally clicked the middle of this, you will go into whats called “Orthographic view” which will mess your head up heaps. It also gives you clear indications as to which direction is where.

Lets get something into the scene!

UNITY SAVE 6

This will spawn a basic cube into the center of your scene

Make sure you ALSO spawn in a “Directional Light” or your scene will be really hard to see in when you play.

UNITY SAVE 7

Q,W,E and R, these are short cut keys you should get familiar with.
Q is your ‘click drag’ navigation.

W is your object movement option.

E is your Object orientation or rotation option.

R is your Object deformation or scaling option.

With these new found skills, go crazy and make a little scene for yourself!

UNITY SAVE 8

After creating whatever scene you have, it is time to finally play around in it!

Open your Character controller packages and drag the “First person controller” into your scene, make sure it is over the top of the cubes you have just placed. Note: if your controller looks like its half way through the cubes, use (W) shortcut key to move it above the cubes.

Once you are happy and want to try it out, hit the play button located above the scene window.

Hope you enjoy yourself with this very basic starter into Unity.

I shall cover Navigation in my next tutorial.

Thanks for reading!

First post!

In a quick summary, my name is Josh (Oshja) and I have been studying advanced game development at the academy of interactive entertainment in Melbourne!

Its been a fun couple years and I have learned a lot from it thus far and expect to learn a lot more throughout my life.. In the meanwhile, i figured I should post some works up and possibly share in some knowledge to anyone out there who cares about game design!
SkullHope people enjoy what i have to offer.. 😀
